Narrative Theory Continued

"Pavement"

Vladimir Propp's Theory

  • The Hero = the Hero is usually the protagonist, and the first character we see, and therefore the first and only character present in "Pavement" Opening Sequence is likely the Hero, and prescribes to this aspect of Propp's Theory
Todorov's Theory
  • Opening two minutes and therefore, you cannot really analyse the storyline according to Todorov's theory
  • Either begins in a state of Equilibrium, where alcoholism and disarray is the norm for the protagonist
  • Or a state of Disequilibrium

"The Naked Truth"

Vladimir Propp's Theory
  • Main character (In relation to 1990's film e.g. Clueless) is likely to fill the "Hero" role. Furthermore, the opening is effectively her getting ready to go out, to go on a Quest (Re-emphasising the idea that she is the Hero in Propp's Theory)
Todorov's Theory
  • Based on Shakespeare, classic genre conventions
  • Informed by genre
  • Likely the Equilibrium or the start of the Disequilibrium
Enigma Code
  • The audience is intrigued by the character e.g. Who is she (What is she like)?
  • Who is the guy texting her? What is her relationship with said guy?
Gibson
  • Very cliche and consistent with genre conventions
